Ray Cole, the New Orleans artist and fashion designer whose hand-painted
Tapestries, silk scarves, dresses and other wearable art pieces are collected around the world, past away peacefully on Tuesday, June 27 2017 following a brief illness at the age of 68. He was the son of the late Raymond Edward Cole and late Madge McBride Goff and the stepson of Holyn Cole. A native of Blytheville, Arkansas, Cole moved with his family to New Orleans when he was 17. He graduated from the University of New Orleans. He leaves behind in mourning his beloved partner, James Waddell, whom survives him. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters; Bryant Cole, David Cole, Jonathan Cole , Michael Cole, Renee Cole, Debbie Courson, Waynette Cole (Glynn Singley) and Kari Lafleur. He was predeceased by brothers Charles Cole and Bob Eubanks. Over the years, Cole’s designs helped win him over 50 Alpha Awards for fashion and national recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980. In 1991, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Fashion Group International Inc. of New Orleans. He leaves extensive body of work, designs and patented embellishment processes developed with his partner James Waddell. Friends are invited to celebrate his life, friendship and art during a reception at the New Orleans Art Center located 3330 St. Claude Avenue New Orleans, Louisiana 70117 in the Bywater on Saturday, July 8 from 4pm to 6pm.
